BackgroundThe Mineral Physics Institute (MPI) is located in the Earth and Space Sciences building of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In the following text, we hope to convey the evolving vision of the Institute as we feel that this is a venture into uncharted territory, exploring the new paradigm of how science is to be pursued in the University of the 21st century. Crucial elements of this paradigm include cutting-edge research that is providing new information at the frontier of the science, multi-disciplinary research that makes optimal use of national investments, an international platform that enables interaction across national borders, an educational environment that stimulates the minds of the next generation of scientists, linkages with industry so as to minimize the turn-around-time between discovery and development, and basic support for the community through education in the K-12 arena emphasizing that science is a process, not a set of facts. The new paradigm also requires inclusive multi-culturalism with active recruitment of future scientists from non-traditional communities.
