Linda Selvaggio

self_photo.jpg (9915 bytes) Hi. My name is Linda Selvaggio and I recently received my B.S. degree in Environmental Geology and my M.A.T. degree from Stony Brook University.  For my 1998 and 1999 summer research project, I  focused on the sedimentary deposition of the material on the bluffs at the David Weld Preserve.

Long Island’s topography was molded by the advancement and retreats of several glacial events. Evidence of these events appear in the sediment, rocks and topography of the area.  Taking a closer look at the stratigraphic column, I will point out features found in the various beds that help us determine how this sediment was deposited.

I also created a guide describing: "The Geology of the bluffs at The David Weld Sanctuary".  In this guide I include a brief geologic history of the area and point out the evidence that can be found along the shore to back this up.The guide was written so the ‘non-geologist’ can enjoy learning about the history of these bluffs. I also devised lesson plans for Earth Science students who wish to learn how to construct a stratigraphic column and utilize the necessary tools used on this project. This web site is under construction...
