Sedimentary Features

The above photograph represents the research I am conducting on the bluffs at the David Weld Sanctuary. The yellow numbers correspond to specific sedimentary features on the cliff and the blue numbers correspond to structural features. Click on the corresponding numbers for close up photos of these features.

1. The left side of the photo shows the clay surface before it was cut away.  Note that the original bedding plane is evident on the surface.

2. Climbing ripples

3. Parallel striations found on soft mudstone inbedded in unit 3. These markings may be evidence of glacial transport.

4. Parallel laminations lead up into climbing ripples.

5. Gravel bed indicates a sudden change in depositional environment.
